General Information and Physical Facilities

The language of instruction for our department and graduate programs is Turkish. We do not have any courses taught in a foreign language.

Our department has an archive consisting of approximately 33,000 slides and a library composed of books donated by Prof. Dr. Suut Kemal Yetkin and Prof. Dr. Bedrettin Cömert. Additionally, we have a laboratory equipped with 5 computers and scanners, which is exclusively open for the use of our department's students.

MOur graduates can work in state or private museums, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the General Directorate of Foundations, the Department of National Palaces affiliated with the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), governorships and municipalities, as well as libraries and archives. They can also work as guides in the private sector, consultants in architecture/restoration companies, and take positions in art galleries.

Undergraduate Program

To enter the Art History Department undergraduate program, candidates must have completed their high school education or an equivalent education abroad, and obtained a sufficient score in the SÖZ (Verbal) score type of the YKS (Higher Education Institutions Examination).

Students must successfully complete a total of 240 ECTS credits by taking departmental compulsory courses corresponding to 133 ECTS, 70 ECTS of intra-departmental elective courses, 21 ECTS of extra-departmental elective courses, and common compulsory courses (TKD, BEB, AİT, etc.).

Yes, there is a mandatory internship in our program. Students are required to complete a 20- working-day internship at the end of the spring semester.

Yes, our courses are taught accompanied by visual materials. Whenever possible, field studies, museum and exhibition visits, trips, and examinations are organized; courses are conducted practically and interactively through selected examples.

Yes, the recognition of education received by students who have previously studied at another higher education institution in Turkey or abroad, and credit transfers, are carried out within the framework of relevant YÖK (Council of Higher Education) and Hacettepe University regulations.

Master's Program

Candidates must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.50 out of 4.00, score at least 55 standard points (quantitative, verbal, or equal weight) in ALES, and score at least 50 points in YDS (or an equivalent exam).

Yes, in the Art History Master's and Ph.D. entrance exams, candidates are required to prepare a file containing their short resume, areas of interest, reasons for choosing the department, and their views on Art History, and submit it to the Department secretariat the week before the exam date.

Yes, candidates wishing to enter the program are subjected to a two-stage exam, written and oral. Candidates who fail the written exam are not admitted to the oral exam (interview).

Students admitted to the program as a result of the interview may be asked to successfully complete the Scientific Preparation program by taking basic Art History undergraduate courses if deemed necessary by the exam jury.

Students must successfully complete a total of 120 ECTS (at least 60 ECTS for courses and 60 ECTS for thesis work) and pass the thesis defense exam.

Ph.D. Program

No. In addition to Art History graduates, graduates of History, Philosophy, Turkology, Sociology, Archaeology, Anthropology, Architecture, History of Architecture, Restoration, Archaeometry, and Museology departments can also apply.

Candidates must have a minimum master's GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00, score at least 60 standard points in ALES, and score at least 60 points in YDS (or an equivalent).

The standard duration of education for our Ph.D. program is 4 years, and the maximum completion period is 6 years.

To graduate, 10 courses with a total of 29 national credits, and a minimum of 120 ECTS course load and 120 ECTS thesis work (a total of 240 ECTS) must be successfully completed.

Yes, in addition to holding academic positions at universities, our Ph.D. graduates can take on high-level roles in ministries, museums, research institutes, architecture/restoration companies, and private art galleries.
